A word on non-musical people

To be human is to be musical, there’s not a person alive who isn’t musical because the brain is a musical organ. We are music to our core! Those who don’t identify as musical probably learnt that ‘musical’ means people can play a Western instrument to a certain standard, can sing to a certain standard, had instrument lessons form a young age or can read Western music notation.

Non of this means musical.

✨A word on ‘Musical People’

It is a blessing and privilege to contain the skills the world calls ‘musical’, they afford us much external validation and opportunity. Also, often our sense of who we are as musicians is guided by our teacher/genre/contract/audience, and many find that the ‘more musical’ we become, the further from our truest expression we found ourselves. The less likely to play, make mistakes, go out of tune, be unpolished.

✨A word on ‘all people’

Every single one of us has music inside us that music needs to be expressed. Being musical is how we express our emotions, our creativity, our unique perspective, our imagination. Without rhythm, melody, pace, sound, repetition and harmony our brain find life harder, and less safe.

Music is what soothes our nervous system. Not ‘good’ music. And expressing it is what moves emotion through our body so that we are less pent up, and experience more felt safety.
