Emotional release and online group singing

One of the things I most love about doing online group singing experiences is that we don’t get when we sing in real life, although of course there are amazing things that we get from singing in real life together that we don’t get online, but one of the things I love is that when someone experiences tears or externalises emotion during an online group singing session, it’s really nice to be able to acknowledge their emotion and I usually say ‘I see and acknowledge your tears’ and holding space, sending love, whatever needs to be said in that moment.

But often when we comfort a person with touch, it’s almost like a cue then for wrapping it up - sniffling, wiping the tears, and moving on. Especially if we’re in a session like a choir or group singing. But when we can’t be there to touch them in real life, it means their tears can continue. Their emotional outlet can continue. And I really love that for them, and for all of us to witness it!

It’s a very powerful therapeutic experience that I’ve only recognised comes when we are not actually together in the same room - and that is a really special benefit to A Gathering Of Voices, and any online group singing experience! I LOVE the way that tears during AGOV just keep flowing - it’s beautiful to experience and to witness.

Melody is one of the most effective inputs for activating the limbic system and so crying while singing is SO COMMON.

And so needed. More of it please! Xx
