History

Tingsha were being used as a sacred tool in the Himalayas for many generations before they became popular in the West. They consist of two small meditation cymbals, connected by a chord which are struck together to create a high pitched tone. This tone is very powerful and can be used to cleanse space, sound the beginning and end of a lesson or meditation, or mark a call to action. The strike of an OMMG tingsha will produce an extended vibration and can be used in meditation/mindfulness practice. As always, there are no rules with how to play an OMMG instrument – we recommend you experiment and use your tingsha in the way that suits you. Most tingsha available on the market are set in a mould and the sacred symbols adorning the instruments are part of that production. We are proud to say that every OMMG tingsha has been etched with sacred symbols during a separate part of it’s creation – therefore every single item is unique and cannot be replicated.

A Word About Pitch

The tingsha is a non-tuned percussive instruments. This means that it is not tuned to a specific pitch as it is made, and this is a characteristic of what makes the Tingsha unique. Instruments of non-western origin traditionally do not abide by the rules of the Western Scale and therefore the pitch created by each cymbol on your pair may ‘clash’, and the pitch of every tingsha will be unique. OMMG makes a point of not providing the pitch of each instrument to customers upon request, as this does not support the traditional purpose or intent of our instruments. We suggest you choose whichever instrument you’re most drawn to and know that the sound it creates will be perfect for you at that time.

A Word About Cleaning

Keep your instruments dry and clean as best you can. Please don’t use chemical based cleaning products on your instruments. Their finish contributes to their pitch, and any abrasive substance can damage the surface. Dusting your instruments should be enough, though gentle soapy water will polish them if they need it.  Please also note that the bowls, bells and tingsha contain copper and will tarnish over time as a result of their exposure to oxygen. This is a characteristic of these instruments and should be respected and endeared. You can energetically cleanse your instrument by playing it with the conscious intent of cleansing it. You may like to picture light emanating from the sound as you play, this intention, combined with the vibration of the instrument will keep it free of stagnant energy, this is especially important for instruments used in a therapeutic setting or as a tool for vibrational realignment.
